Pool Calcium Hardness Calculator (Calcium Chloride Amounts)
Calcium hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium in pool water. If your test reading is below the range recommended for your pool, this calculator estimates calcium chloride for the increase you enter. The 200–400 ppm range listed by Columbus Public Health is a public-pool reference; check your pool or equipment manufacturer's guidance for your own pool.
Calcium chloride amounts for a +10 ppm increase
| Pool volume | 100% calcium chloride | 77% calcium chloride |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 gallons | 0.46 lb | 0.60 lb |
| 10,000 gallons | 0.93 lb | 1.20 lb |
| 15,000 gallons | 1.39 lb | 1.80 lb |
| 20,000 gallons | 1.85 lb | 2.40 lb |
| 30,000 gallons | 2.78 lb | 3.61 lb |
The calculator uses your entered pool volume, current reading, target and the product strength. For example, a 10,000-gallon pool moving from 200 to 300 ppm needs ten +10 ppm increments, so the estimate is about 9.3 lb of 100% calcium chloride or 12.0 lb of 77% product.
The calculation converts gallons to liters, treats 1 ppm as 1 mg/L, and accounts for the molecular-weight ratio between calcium chloride and calcium carbonate used to report hardness. Product hydration and purity vary, so select the strength printed on the container.
Add chemicals carefully
- Verify the pool volume and test result before calculating a dose.
- Split a large dose into portions, circulate the water and retest.
- Follow the product label and equipment-maker guidance. The label is the final word.
- Read the product label before handling chemicals, and review the VDH safety guidance linked below.
