Pool Chemical Safety: Handling, Storage and Emergencies
On this page
Pool chemicals help disinfect water, but improper handling can injure skin, eyes or the respiratory system. Before opening a container, read its label and use the protective equipment and procedure it specifies. The product label is the final word.
Before handling chemicals
Use this checklist before each chemical task:
VDH warns that incompatible products can react, causing fire, explosion or toxic gas. Do not combine chemicals unless the manufacturer's label specifically directs it, and do not reuse a scoop across products.
Store chemicals safely
- Keep chemicals in their original, clearly labeled containers; do not reuse containers.
- Store them in a secure place away from children and pets, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture.
- Keep liquid chemicals below dry chemicals. Store products away from equipment such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers.
- Check containers for damage or leaks. Keep the storage area smoke-free.
If there is a spill or exposure
Follow the cleanup instructions on the product label. Take care that spilled products do not mix with other chemicals, trash or debris. Use only the cleanup materials and equipment the label specifies.
If someone may be in danger, contact Poison Control or 911. VDH specifically identifies chemicals in the eyes or on skin, or directly inhaled chemical dust or vapors, as situations that may require urgent help. Tell responders where you are and which chemicals are involved.
Keep pool water within guidance
Safe storage and handling go with regular water testing. CDC recommends testing chlorine and pH at least twice a day, and more often when many people use the pool. Follow the product and test-kit directions when adjusting the water; see the pool chemistry levels chart and chlorine dose guide.
